Art and Design

At Chorlton Park we believe that art education is a crucial medium to help children express their identities. 

At Chorlton Park, we follow the updated statutory framework for EYFS and the National Curriculum Programmes of Study for Art to develop a modern and engaging curriculum which meets the needs of our pupils.

Our curriculum is skills based, which ensures progression in expertise as children move up the school. In addition, we believe that our role is to develop children’s creative abilities and talents (art. 29 UNICEF Charter) so our aim is that when our children leave Year 6, they are confident to experiment, explore and develop personal ideas in a creative context. We aim for our children to have an appreciation of art and be able to make connections between their own work and the work of others so we have ensured that alongside skills the children study a range of artists that represent ‘founding fathers’ of a style of artwork as well as local artists or artists from different cultures and ethnic backgrounds. We have also incorporated study of art as political expression in upper KS2.

Our Art Curriculum in KS1 and 2  ensures coverage across the year groups and appropriate progression. In EYFS we ensure that children are exposed to a range of mark making materials (both outside and inside) in continuous provision and that art activities mix adult-directed activities and child-led experimentation.

In June 2019, we were awarded an Artsmark Silver Award. We were praised for the development of our skills based curriculum, our use of sketchbooks and our annual art weeks. We are now participants of the Chorlton Arts Festival.

Children at CPPS are taught Art by their class teacher for at least 6 hours per term. Work is recorded in art books (and children receive sketch books in Y4 for additional sketch practice). All children complete a portrait 3 times a year in their portrait book which follows them through school from nursery and is a clear example of the progress that child has made in their art skills from EYFS – Y6.

At Chorlton Park we believe that all children have a right to a good quality education (Art. 28 UNICEF Charter) and should be able to access and enjoy our Art curriculum. We believe that Art is an area where many children with SEND can shine, but understand that some individuals may have sensory needs and may not be able to use all art mediums, and we therefore adapt our lessons to make them accessible to all pupils.
